The ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED line of laptops with tablet mode support is aimed at everyday use and representatives of creative professions such as designers and artists. First of all, thanks to the presence of a successful OLED touch screen and a stylus included. The instance that came to our review is labeled UP5401EA-KN094W and is based on an Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor from the Tiger Lake U family with Willow Cove architecture. This is an energy-efficient model that has four physical cores and eight threads capable of operating at maximum frequencies from 2.8 to 4.7 GHz, depending on the load on the cores and the thermal package. The integrated graphics chip Intel Iris Xe Graphics, if necessary, allows you to play simple projects at low or medium graphics settings. Although the main purpose of this graphics is hardware acceleration of work applications and programs.

Delivery set

The laptop comes in a nice gray box with a carrying handle that will keep the box from opening if the packing seal is broken. On the side and back of the package are stickers with serial numbers and a list of the main technical characteristics of the product.

The laptop is originally packaged in such a way that when the box is opened, it seems to slide out and rise out of it by itself. The cover for the device is hidden behind the top lining of the box, everything else is in the bottom and side of the box.

The device comes with a case, a power supply and a power cable for it, an adapter from a USB port to RJ45 for connecting a wired network, a stylus and various documentation.

The A20-100P1A power supply can deliver up to 100 W of power and has dimensions of 75x75x29 mm. The length of the fixed USB Type-C cable is 1.5 meters. A separate power wire with a Euro plug has a length of 0.8 meters.

Appearance

The ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED has a gray body and is made of durable and lightweight aluminum alloy. It copes well with the load of diagonal twisting, even with the screen raised. To emphasize the overall endurance of the laptop, the manufacturer declares compliance with the military standard MIL-STD810H. The top panel of the display contains the ASUS logo, shifted to the right side. Imperceptible to the touch “waves” of grinding diverge from it in concentric circles. The surface collects dust and fingerprints well, so it will need to be wiped down quite often. On the inside of the ErgoLift hinges there are technological outgrowths on which the lid rests at large tilt angles.

The leather case is made in the style of an envelope. On the front side, you can see the embossed Zenbook inscription. The folding part is held on a magnet, and inside there is an extension fastener for the stylus on the fold.

The bottom panel of the laptop has slanted edges on the sides and front. Speaker holes are located closer to the front, and the outlet grilles of the ventilation system are located on the back on the sides. The bottom is flat, with four rubber feet at the corners and ventilation intakes towards the back of the case.

At the back, between the reinforced 360-degree hinges, there is another ventilation grille.

A recess in the middle of the front bottom edge allows you to lift the lid, but it will not work to open it completely with one hand, since four magnets hold it closed. Probably, this is done so that the laptop does not accidentally open in tablet mode.

ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED

On the left side, there are built-in HDMI ports and two USB Type-C with Thunderbolt 4, which can be used, among other things, to charge the device. In the middle there are three narrowed slots designed to improve ventilation.

On the right side there is one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, a combined 3.5mm headset output, three more ventilation holes, a microSD card reader, dot indicators for device activity and battery charge.

The USB to RJ45 adapter looks too big and inflexible. The network activity indicator is built into it at the cable entry. But the main problem is the completely glossy body, which instantly collects all the dust and fingerprints.

This is what the laptop looks like with the adapter connected:

A nice accessory of this model is the branded stylus Asus Pen SA201H. It is made in a metal case with a plastic cover on the back and has dimensions of 150×9.5 mm and weighs 20 grams. Works on MPP 2.0 technology, distinguishes 4096 degrees of depression in the force range from 14 to 450 grams, taking into account the angle of inclination up to 45 degrees inclusive. They can “draw” lines with a minimum thickness of up to 0.2 mm. There are two mechanical buttons on the front of the swing. The lower one is responsible for “erasing”, the upper one performs the function of the right mouse button. It is powered by an unusual AAAA battery, which should be enough for about a year of operation. Theoretically, you can find and order replacement rods for it.

ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED has several modes of operation depending on the angle of the display. Up to 180 degrees inclusive works like a regular laptop. When tilted more than 110 degrees from the horizontal, the lower part rises, leaning on the screen stands. The technology is called ErgoLift, which improves cooling and creates a richer sound by forming a “chamber” relative to the table surface.

ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED

The display bezels are quite narrow and aesthetic – only 4.3 mm on the sides and 5.8 mm at the top. At the top center is a webcam window, and on the sides of it are two microphones.

Up to 180 degrees or more, special reinforced hinges allow the laptop to unfold. The manufacturer guarantees for them up to 20 thousand opening and closing cycles without damage.

ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED

Between 180 and 360 degrees, the system should go into tablet mode and “flip” the screen to match the tilt, but this doesn’t happen in Windows 11. In general, in this operating system, “tablet mode” is a separate topic for conversation. Therefore, it is unlikely that in the “tent” option it will be possible to fully use the laptop.

ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED

When you switch to full-fledged tablet mode, the keyboard and touchpad are automatically disabled.

ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED

I personally really liked the ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED keyboard. Despite the absence of a number block, there are separate dedicated Home, PgUp, PgDn, End and arrow keys on the right side, which greatly facilitates working with large text arrays. Above there are separate PrtSc, Insert, Delete. In general, the ANSI standard is used, the island-type buttons are recessed relative to the level of the case. Pantograph mechanisms (scissors) are installed under the buttons, providing uniform pressing with a total stroke of 1.4 mm. The English and Ukrainian layouts are softly and clearly highlighted in white with three levels of brightness. Caps Lock indicators, microphone activity and camera activity are built into the corresponding buttons. Also noteworthy is the start button, with a built-in fingerprint scanner in the upper right corner.

The sensitive touchpad measures 130×75 mm. Its surface is matte and slippery to the touch. Mechanical keys are hidden under the left and right bottom corners. It supports recognition of four fingers at the same time and a large number of intuitive gestures. If you hold your finger for a second in the upper right corner, ASUS NumberPad technology will turn on and the illuminated outlines of the buttons of the virtual touch numeric pad will appear on the touchpad. The icon in the upper left corner (if you hold your finger on it) allows you to change one of two levels of backlight brightness.

Screen

The best and arguably the most expensive element in the ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED is its touchscreen. It has a 14″ format (302×189 mm), a refresh rate of 90 Hz, and viewing angles of at least 85 degrees on each side. The use of OLED technology fully compensates for the glossy finish of the display with high brightness. Everything that is displayed on the monitor is visible in any light, from all sides at all angles and without color distortion. The screen is Pantone certified for color accuracy and TUVRheinland certified for low levels of harmful blue light.

Inside, there is a Samsung ATNA40YK04-0 matrix with a resolution of 2880×1800 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:10. The response speed of the matrix is 0.2 ms. Supports stylus and simultaneous recognition of 10 finger touches.

According to our measurements, the screen provides coverage of the sRGB color space at 100%, Adobe RGB 95.5% and DCI P3 99%. This is enough to work with design and color. Otherwise, additional calibration can be carried out.

Brightness is adjustable from 3 to 343 cd/m² (according to our measurements). The contrast ratio could not be set instrumentally (the device gave out the value of infinity), so we have to take it on faith that it reaches 1,000,000:1. All subsequent measurements were made at a brightness of 120 cd/m².

The color temperature is consistently around 6600K at all brightness levels. The deviation of the gamma curves is insignificant.

The screen provides near-perfectly accurate color reproduction, with an average DeltaE deviation well below unity in all colors except for a few dark tones.

ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED

The ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED screen is simply gorgeous. But remember that OLED technology has several features, such as color fading over time. Yes, usually the warranty is 7000 working hours (at brightness up to 200 cd / m²), and to extend the life of the matrix, here you can see such long-forgotten things as a color splash screen after 5 minutes of inactivity, a dark Windows theme for customization, and Samsung’s built-in technology, which will automatically compensate for the burn-in of certain points by increasing their brightness.

Internal structure

On the back of the bottom panel there are plastic elements to increase rigidity and several soft and thermal pads.

The 63 Wh battery is located in the front of the case, in the area under the palms. Two acoustic speakers are equipped on the sides of it, and wireless antennas are built into the front left and right. The motherboard and everything else is in the area under the keyboard.

A 1 TB Samsung PM9A1 (MZVL21T0HCLR-00B00) NVMe drive with a capacity of 1 TB and 2280 format is hidden under the overlay in the center. There is no free space and slots for installing additional drives. The RAM is soldered on the board.

The cooling system consists of two centrifugal fans with radiators on the sides. They are connected to the processor built in the center by one separate heat pipe each. They work in three modes of operation – quiet, standard and efficient. In the first two, the operation of the fans is not audible at all. In the latter, they create noticeable noise under full load.

By and large, the average user has nothing to do inside this device. It will not work to increase the amount of memory, replacing a standard drive also does not make much sense, and all work on cleaning the cooling system or replacing the battery is best done in specialized services.

Software

Cooling efficiency and noise level

The laptop cooling system is closely related to the operating mode and heat dissipation of the central processor. The value is played by whether the device is powered by an outlet or by battery. Only in the first case, the processor is fully revealed. It is clear that in the “quiet” and “balanced” version, the power of the device is limited, and the fan works quietly. Therefore, we are interested in the scenario of maximum efficiency with the power supply connected. In it, at the beginning of loading, the frequencies instantly jump to 4.7 GHz, the processor warms up to 100 degrees and 27% throttling begins. A couple of tens of seconds after the fans reach their maximum speed, the frequencies decrease and stabilize at 3.2 GHz across all cores. The cooling system keeps 86 degrees on the CPU while running at a high noise level. Exhaust temperatures reach 45 degrees from both radiators. The laptop was tested in the AIDA64 stress test at an ambient temperature of 22.5 degrees Celsius.

Game programs

ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED is not designed for gaming at all, since the integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics GPU is not designed for “gamers” and providing comfortable fps in complex 3D graphics. Therefore, we limited ourselves to synthetic tests so that potential buyers have a rough idea of the capabilities of this system. Of course, if you want, you can play simple projects at low or medium settings.

The laptop has a more than adequate level of autonomy, which can be increased by lowering the screen brightness and some energy-saving technologies. The manufacturer also took care of extending battery life, so in the MyASUS application settings you can limit the maximum battery level to 80% or even 60% in case the device is constantly connected to the mains.
